The PBF I'm not kitting this thing, but it was fun! In the summer of 2007 I found an rc "airplane??" phenomenon called a Flying Pizza Box. While not truly a box, it was as square as a pizza box and at first glance looked to have all the aerodynamic properties and associated flight characteristics of a manhole cover. However, after viewing one too many youtube videos of these buggers in flight, I rounded up some plastic and made my own.
I figured if I could make this thing fly, things that look like real airplanes should be a breeze.
I flew the crap out of this thing for about a month until I got tired of beating up my radio equipment. It would hover, fly like a leaf, flat spin inverted and upright, you name it. TIP- if you decide to (or more likely, suddenly find yourself in a) flat spin inverted, leave about a mile to recover or you might as well chop the power and ride it on down to the ground and try to make a controlled crash. Ask my box of broken props, motor mounts and needle valves how I know this. While it flies ok, and is pretty neat when moving, when you slow it down close to the ground bad things can happen, like cartwheels in the weeds and upside down landings (don't ask). But if you have an old radio and a decent engine, build one for the hell of it. The first time I flew it I was laughing so hard I was damn near in tears it was so much fun. Google "Pizza Box Flyer" for more info, there are plenty of sites out there explaining more than I care to about this thing.
